In the county of
Lancashire, and in neighbouring counties, there has existed a family
of the name of Peatfield /Patefield/ Paitefield going back to at least
1500. Over the years some branches of this family have changed
their name to Pitfield. This transision seems to have taken place at
different times in different areas, with the earliest instance of the
name spelt as Pitfield being in1767 with the marriage of Charles Pitfield
( -1796) to Ann Robinson (1750-1817) at Tunstall, Lancashrie (see
below). I have not researched the families of Peatfield/ Patefield
/Paitfield, as this has been done by others, but have concentrated my
efforts on those lines where the name has changed to Pitfield. Some
of those shown in this database have the surname shown as Peatfield
or Patefield with subsequent generations changing to Pitfield. In some
cases individuals are shown with both the Pitfield name and its earlier
version as these people seem to have changed their name during their
lifetime. The names Pitfield, Peatfield and Patefield all exist in the
north of England today. This database shows every reference that I have
to the name Pitfield in the county of Lancashire. Some of these references
build into quite large family groups whilst others may just show one
individual, with meagre details, whom I have been unable to connect
to anyone else. This Database has its own Index,
in which you can make a search for members of the Pitfield family.
It should be pointed
out that if you are looking for a particular member of the Pitfield
family they may not appear in the Database that you expect. For instance,
there are members of the Pitfield family who appear in Australia, New
Zealand and America who I can show are descended from either Robert
Pitfold of Allington or have their origins in Lancashire. Therefore
they are shown in either the Dorset or Lancashire Databases, rather
than the Australian or North American Databases. To find the Pitfield
that you are interested in, you may have to visit more than one Database,
each of which has its own index.
As with all of the
Databases, I am not showing a person sheet for anyone who was born after
the year 1900. This is to protect the privacy of any person who
is living. If you are a member of the Pitfield family accessing
this site (and therefore almost certainly born after 1900!!!), then
your details will not be shown, but it is likely that your ancestors
are, and it is possible that I am in possession of information relating
to you and your family, that is not shown on this site. If you would
like to make contact with
me I would be happy to share information with you.
The
Lancashire family that I am particularly interested in is that of Charles
Pitfield of Cantsfield ( -1796), some of who's descendants settled
in America. I have developed a theory concerning the origins of Charles
that is explained in the Introduction to Database
Two.
